Cis-trans and e-z naming scheme for alkenes
WebNov 2, 2024 · The cis-trans convention is quite an intuitive one. In organic chemistry, it is generally used for disubstituted alkenes and alicyclic compounds. All you have to do is to figure out whether the two identical substituent groups are on the same side or different sides of the ring or carbon-carbon double bond. WebE/Z describe absolute stereochemistry whereas cis/trans only tells us relative stereochemistry. E/Z can be used without confusion when you have 3 or 4 different groups attached to the double bond carbons which is where cis/trans starts to break down. (2) Number the carbons, ensuring the double bond gets the lowest possible number. (3) Include the double bond location as a prefix to the root name. (4) Add any substituents as prefixes, in alphabetical order if needed.
WebExample: but-2-ene. Isomer 1 : Step 1 : split the alkene. Step 2 : assign the relative priorities. The two attached atoms are C and H, so since the atomic numbers C > H then the -CH3 group is higher priority. Step 3 : look at the relative positions of the higher priority groups : same side = Z, hence (Z)-but-2-ene. Isomer 2 : WebAug 1, 2024 · Your method looks fine. There is another simple method (with three steps though). Convert the the cis alkene to a dibromo derivative using bromine; Use two equivalents of $\ce {NaNH2}$ to get an alkyne (elimination); Selective reduction to trans …
