The main thing is to do it as quickly as possible. I had a similar issue after the most recent update where I could not assign my steering input. The only solution was to sharply/abruptly turn the wheel. However, it doesn't let you go the opposite direction from Drive to Reverse, or Reverse to Park, etc.
